The Value of User-Led Groups

Last week user-led groups and funding organisations met in London to talk about the current crisis facing user-led organisations and their future role in ensuring an independent voice and local support. A briefing paper, produced in partnership with Shaping Our Lives, 'The Future of User Led Organisations'. Those who attended shared what they thought about why we're seeing a decline of user-led groups and the social impact. This included:

  • Funders not recognising the difference and value of use-led groups

  • The diminishing sources of support and accessible funding

  • A loss of opportunity to be part of an accepting and supportive community

  • Larger organisations working competitively not collaboratively

  • Less support and resources to connect and network

Funders present recognised the power relations and conflicts and also spoke about the challenges of making descisions with declining funds. They also acknowledged that some funders needed to better understand and value user-led groups. The meeting finished with everyone thinking about how to collectively address the problems. A full report will be made available. You can also read the summary of findings from the initial survey we conducted with members here. Visit our website for further updates on NSUN's campaign.
