Shaping Our Lives and the University of Essex are looking for people with lived experience of using services to take part in a focus group in London on Friday 20th September.

The Putting Power into Participation focus group is to look at findings from research completed by the University of Essex. They want to find out about how involvement and participation can lead to direct policy change.

Involvement activity with people with lived experience of using services is often done within current policy frameworks. This can reduce the authority and usefulness of service user views, undermining their contribution.

Researchers at the University of Essex want to:
1) encourage more democratic and less tokenistic involvement;
2) widen the diversity of participation;
3) enable service user-led organisations to challenge policy directly.

This workshop will explore ways in which service users might be enabled to directly challenge policy decisions that affect them. The emphasis will be on identifying processes in and around participative democracy.

The workshop is scheduled to coincide with a range of publications: a journal article entitled ‘Stigma and mental health: exploring potential models to enhance opportunities for a parity of participation’; a
‘Questioning the Patient Participation Imperative’; and ‘Silencing Patients’.

Refreshments and a light lunch is provided.
Travel and support: Reasonable travel and support costs will be funded. Involvement payment: There is an involvement payment of £25 for those people who wish to accept it.

Workshop on PPI across NHSX and NHSD digital strategy and services

(Via VCSE Health and Wellbeing Alliance)

NHSX and NHS Digital are committed to working with patients to ensure they meet the shared goal of driving better health and care outcomes through the use of digital, data and technology.

Their teams are responsible for setting digital and data strategy, policy and standards, and for developing and maintaining digital products and services including the NHS App, NHS login, the NHS website, 111 online, and e-Referrals into secondary care.
 
They want to work with citizens and patients to understand how to work more collaboratively at every stage - from creating strategy, to the service design and delivery process, through to implementation and uptake - to ensure patients and people are at the centre of all they do.
 
As such, they are organising a workshop to bring patients and delivery teams together to co-produce practical guidance for their teams. This is likely to include how to identify patients to work with, how to ensure teams and patients get the most out of working together, and any 'rules of engagement'.
 
The workshop will run from 11am to 3pm on Wednesday on 11 September at Co Space North in central Leeds. No pre-preparation will be required from participants. Attendees will be a mix of patients, citizens, representative organisations and teams from NHS Digital and NHSX.
 
They will arrange and pay for travel for attendees. Your time would be paid for in line with their usual policy and a sandwich lunch will be provided.
