Mind in South West Herts flies High for Mind Week!

15/05/2007

To celebrate Mind Week 2007, Mind in South West Herts will be enjoying the fresh air by designing, building and flying kites in Watford. The theme for this year looks at the benefits of ‘green activity’ and the effect it can have on your mental health and wellbeing. In a ground breaking report by National Mind, research has shown that simply taking a walk out in a country park can help reduce feelings of depression for 71% of people.
National Mind Chief Executive Paul Farmer stated that "Hundreds of people have benefited from the green projects run by local Mind associations but if prescribing ecotherapy was part of mainstream practice it could potentially help the millions of people across the country who are affected by mental distress."
Local Mind members have been building kites as part of the art and craft groups and will be heading to Cassio Park on 24th May to try and find the best flyer. Thanks to support from the international kite company, Flexifoil, the winner will walk away with a brand new Sting 3.3 power kite and tired arms!

Local manager Samantha Cornish stated that ‘it is important to highlight the ways in which people experiencing mental distress can actively improve their wellbeing. The links between ‘green activity’ and good mental health are becoming more apparent and members who attend out local gardening group and Summer walks are already benefiting.’

Mind Week 2007 is officially between 12th – 19th May. Each year there is a theme which aims to increase awareness about mental health. This year looks at the links between ‘green activity’ and wellbeing and is supported by a research based report. Information about mind can be found here: www.mind.org.uk .
