Twenty Hertfordshire residents have been elected to the public seats on the board of governors for the Hertfordshire Partnership NHS Trust.
The Trust, which provides the County’s mental health and learning disability services, has an annual budget of over £170 million and employs 3,000 staff. It is the first NHS body in Hertfordshire to apply to become a foundation trust.
All such trusts are required to appoint a board of governors, which is responsible for representing the interests of the local community in the management of the trust.
Providing more consultation about future services is one of the key objectives for the new-style trusts, which will become more independent of Whitehall control.
Nearly 1,400 Hertfordshire residents, including users of NHS services and their carers, have already registered as Trust Members; anyone aged 14 or over can join. All members will be sent quarterly updates on the Trust’s progress, and will also receive invitations to special meetings and events about developments in services.
The Trust’s Chief Executive, Bill Macintyre, commented: “We are delighted to have such a strong group of Governors for the new Trust. We believe that many more people will want to help shape the future of mental health and learning disability care in Hertfordshire by becoming Trust members. The move to foundation status will help us to deliver more responsive, and more securely funded, services”.
In a parallel election the Trust’s employees have chosen five staff governors.
Local councils, primary care trusts, voluntary organisations and other bodies will nominate another 13 governors.
