Herts Aid BME Football Tournament 29th July 2017

  • Furzefield Leisure Centre Mutton Lane Potters Bar, England, EN6 3BW United Kingdom (map)

Aims of the Tournament

Herts Aid is an HIV and sexual health charity, offering support, educational and clinical services across Hertfordshire.  As well as supporting anyone living with or affected by HIV, and educational projects for schools, professionals and young people’s organisations, we also offer Rapid HIV Testing.

The African Community is particularly disproportionately affected by HIV: this community represents just 2% of the Hertfordshire residents, but 45 % of all known HIV infections.  Following consultation with BME Communities, we understand that the stigma attached to HIV is very high, and it is often felt easier “not to know”.  However, the reality is that if you are HIV positive and do NOT know, at some point you WILL become unwell, and people may speculate.  If an early HIV test is done and you are found to be positive, with confidential treatment and monitoring-no one need ever know your status. You will be able to continue with your life, work and live well, support your family and enjoy playing football.

The aim of the tournament is to encourage as many people as possible to have a FREE rapid HIV test at the event: Our message is simple: “How sure are you, about your HIV status?”

As this will be very much a family event, there will be refreshments at affordable prices, family friendly actives for women and Kids. It will be a great opportunity for people to find out more about local health and community services, learn more about how to lead a healthier lifestyle, meet new people and have an opportunity to network. I have attached a flyer for the event and am confident that this will be a great day for our community.
